How you can help...

Hello Families and Friends!
Over the last several weeks, I have had many parents and friends ask how they can help support our classroom. In these uncertain economic times, we have been fortunate to maintain such a skilled staff, supportive administrators and creative solutions for lack of funding for supplies. However, this year has presented new challenges. With the funding being reduced district-wide, we are being asked to do more with an already limited classroom budget, including purchasing supplemental reading materials, such as classroom magazines. This is also true of individualized classroom technology, which is a much bigger purchase and outside the realm of our classroom budget.
So this year I have created a DonorsChoose website to ask for assistance in purchasing various supplies, supplemental activities and curriculum, as well as classroom technology that we can use during both small and large group instruction. In case you aren't familiar with it already, the concept of DonorsChoose is simple. Teachers create a page, requesting specific items for their classroom. Donors from around the world read about the need, and donate money. DonorsChoose then purchases the supplies, and delivers them to the classroom. This is my first experience with DonorsChoose after seeing the positive impact it has made on many of my fellow teacher's classrooms both at Mountain View and other schools in the Beaverton School District. I am asking that you spread the word about our page to friends and colleagues who may be willing and able to donate. Thanks for all of your support!

We're off to a great start!

Hello families!

Things are moving right along here in the ALC! I can’t believe that it's already October!

We have a few different areas of focus this month…
  • In literacy skills, we are working on creative writing pieces as well as elaborating on our writing. In addition to composing paragraphs about various real-life subjects in our writing journals every day, we also write to thematic writing prompts.
  • In math skills, we’ve been working on identifying fractions using visual representations, including manipulatives and pictures.
  • In science, we’ve been focusing on space science, including creating Powerpoint projects on our favorite planet in the solar system. We will be researching our planet, collecting information and pictures, learning how to cite our sources of information, and practicing our typing skills. Then in a few weeks we will present our projects to the rest of the class! J
  • In life skills, we’ve started our school-wide recycling program, which we use the profits from in order to supplement our weekly cooking budget. So far, we’ve made cheese quesadillas, bagel pizzas with pepperoni and cheese, and homemade applesauce with leftover apples from our school breakfasts. Yum!
Here is our weekly schedule of activities:
Monday- Reading Buddies
Tuesday- Recycling
Wednesday- Library and Shopping Trip
Thursday- Cooking
Friday- Recycling

Some special things are going on in the ALC this year!
  • This year we started a school-wide peer mentoring program that gives regular education students an opportunity to come into the ALC during a variety of academic and leisure times, so that they can become familiar with the students in our class. This also allows our students to make connections with friends that they might not have made otherwise. During our peer mentor time, students come in and help out with daily reading and math activities. Then on Fridays, we have a free choice time where they can choose to play games, read together or do an art project with their friends. It's been so much fun!
  • Another very special activity we started this week was visiting our Reading Buddies in Mrs. Johnson’s class next door. So far, we’ve paired up with our buddies, completed a few get to know you activities, and started picking out books to read or listen to, depending on the day. It’s been a really amazing thing to watch as our students are really getting energized and excited about reading with their peers. More on this to follow!
It's been a great start to the school year and I'm looking forward to all the fun things to come! Thank you for everything you do for our students!

Welcome to the Mountain View ALC Classroom Blog!

Hello families!

Welcome to my new blog! This is another way for families to keep up to date about what is going on in the Mt. View ALC classroom. I will post newsletters, pictures and updates about what we are working on in class. I want to show you some of the cool features!

On the left, there is a "pages" section. This has links to:

-The Mountain View ALC Syllabus
-The ALC Parent Survey (Please fill this out! This is where you can share some important information about your child with me.)
-The Mt. View ALC Supply List (Please check this out!)
-The Mt. View ALC Wishlist

I may add other pages here and there as the year goes on, but those will always be there for your reference.

On the right side, you can find an "about me" section with more information about me, as well as a translate button, in case you or a loved one would like to read the blog in a different language. You will also find older blog posts there as we go along.

Feel free to post any questions or comments you may have. Thanks for reading!
